A K–12 Christian school on Great Exuma, built to fill a gap in island education and to open doors well beyond high school.
Exuma Christian Academy was founded in 2018 by educator and author Keniqua Burrows. The school came together in Ramsey, George Town after years of preparation by a group of Exumians and Bahamians in education, medicine, and ministry who saw a need for a new kind of school on the island and set out to build it.
Today, ECA is a thriving K–12 grade institution serving more than 100 students. Its mission is straightforward: Christian values, character development, and academic excellence, in a learning environment where every student is encouraged to grow intellectually, socially, and spiritually. It is one of Great Exuma’s most established private schools, and its graduating classes are increasingly walking off the island for university.
Friends of Exuma is a longstanding supporter of ECA’s after-school tutoring program — a free program that gives Kindergarten through Fifth Grade students who are performing below grade level extra help in Math and Reading. The program runs three days a week, staffed by trained teachers, and covers everything from lesson materials to end-of-term evaluations.
Alongside the tutoring program, Friends of Exuma funds scholarships that follow ECA’s graduating seniors into university, making higher education actually reachable for Exuma families.
In their Words
"I don't see Friends of Exuma as just donors. I don't see them as sponsors, but actual partners. One of the challenges that we have in Exuma is that we have so much talent, but there's a small pool of resources. Many of our parents, they're struggling. Every little help really goes a long way."
