Cultural Preservation

The traditions and creativity that carry Exuma forward, one generation to the next.

The Case

Culture is what carries a place. In Exuma, it lives in a brass band marching at the Independence Flag Raising, a wooden sloop launched from Elizabeth Harbour every April, an artist’s first solo show, and a half marathon that keeps Bahamian history in a community’s memory. When those things stop happening, a piece of Exuma stops happening with them.

Friends of Exuma’s Cultural Preservation work covers the spaces where Bahamian creativity and heritage are taught, practiced, and passed down. Our partners in this area keep the traditions alive and give the next generation of Exumian artists, musicians, and boat-builders room to grow.

How Friends of Exuma Supports This Work

Every gift to the Community Fund flows to the Cultural Preservation partners doing this work day to day, supporting the artists, coordinators, event organizers, and volunteers who keep Bahamian culture in motion.
