information

we are a “Friends of” 501(c)(3) charitable cause

  • Friends of Exuma can take donations from anyone but provides charitable donation status to US Citizens. As such, we follow IRS operating guidelines when supporting foreign causes. In some cases, an initiative may not be an official charity, but it should be equivalent to a charitable cause in the US. Friends of Exuma maintains a low overhead. There are no paid staff.

WHEN YOU DONATE

  • We help fund the day-to-day operations of the local charity programs enrolled with Friends of Exuma. When you donate, your dollars go into our Community Fund. From the Community Fund, we allocate dollars to support the various charity program’s day-to-day operations.

  • Each program has its own goals which can include special projects, the purchase of equipment, or travel expenses for selected program participants. We label these goals as “initiatives” under each charity’s program page on our website. We ask that donors who wish to donate to a specific charity program or initiative please make a note in the Additional Information field of the donation form so that we know their wishes.

Best practices

  • When enrolling a charity that we support, we ask a number of questions, which include considering whether it is within one of our focus areas. We enroll an initiative by having them provide us with their basic goals, a budget, any other important background information, and an agreement that they will report back to us. In some cases, we release money upon certain milestones. There are also organizations that receive our ongoing support.

  • Friends of Exuma uses a US-based accounting firm to process and track donations, and supports the organization for proper tax compliance.

Engagement with recipients and the community: We look to partner with those who seek funding to provide them with tools to achieve success.

Quarterly board meetings: Friends of Exuma has quarterly board meetings that can be attended virtually.
